Francesco Ruscio

Ph.D. Student in Smart Industry
Bio:

Born in Pistoia, I grew up with a strong passion in science and technology. In 2016, I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florence; then, in 2019, I received my master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florence. I did my master thesis on an autonomous platform for concrete 3D printing during a 6-month Erasmus program at the University of Liverpool. After my graduation, I spent 3 months at the University of Liverpool working on a project related to the Internet-of-Things for unlocking urban farming. I am currently a Ph.D. researcher in Smart Industry at the University of Pisa.

Interests:

Robotics, Automation, Machine Vision, Solid Mechanics, Fluid Dynamics, Additive Manufacturing.

Research Topic:

My research focuses on GNC (Guidance, Navigation and Control) systems for underwater robots. The main goal of my research is the development of precise and robust navigation systems exploiting acoustic and optical odometry. By doing so, reliable as well as cost effective Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) can be used to face future challenges in the marine environment, from deep-sea exploration to maintenance of offshore infrastructures.
